For many years COACHING has been a major focus within the club. We want to give everyone the opportunity to maximise their potential and to meet their personal squash goals. In support of this we offer a wide range of programmes from kids FunSquash for absolute beginners through to high level one to one coaching for county and national standard players.

We are a dedicated group of qualified England Squash Coaches with a range of experience, playing standard and coaching experience.

We offer coaching at all levels depending on what members are looking for.

Junior coaching sessions run twice a week (Thursdays from 16:40 and Sundays from 10am).  All our junior sessions follow good practice in safeguarding, with all coaches fully registered and up to date with their England Squash qualifications.  The sessions are primarily designed to be fun with a focus on developing skills, confidence, competition and good sportsmanship.  All juniors are encouraged to wear the club t-shirt for all coaching sessions, wear protective eyewear and bring a bottle to keep hydrated (there is a drinks fountain in the squash area).

Level 2 coach

Ed started playing squash in Plymouth when he was just two years old. He was South West and Devon Junior Champion and reached a high of number 7 in the England Junior Rankings. He is 2 times York Open Champion, 3 times and current Dunnington Club Champion and 3 times University of York Champion. He also has considerable coaching experience, starting when he was 14.

Currently he coaches the University of York team and and is running sessions regularly at Dunnington. Prior to this he taught in Amsterdam. Ed is also a world ranked professional player and competes in competitions in the UK and Europe.

Outside of squash Ed enjoys playing tennis, golf, watching movies and reading books.

Level 2 coach

Hugh has been a club squash player for over 25 years and enjoys playing team squash in the York and District leagues.  Hugh has a long career background in higher education as a senior lecturer working with young people in sport.  Hugh supports the coaching programme through involvement with the juniors and helping the very young to learn the game through fun, play and enjoyment.  Hugh is committed to supporting the coaching team to be the best it can be through responsible coaching practices, aligning the programme with England Squash recommendations and to be the leading coaching programme in Yorkshire.

Level 1 coach

Fraser is a long-standing squash player who joined the Dunnington club 5 years ago after a 20 year break from playing squash. His coaching is focused mainly on adult beginners, typically new members joining the club and wanting some help. Fraser is also responsible for memberships and marketing on the club committee.

Level 2 coach

Matt is one of our home-grown stars. He has made a significant personal commitment to the game and has represented England in the Vets national team. Matt now shares his knowledge and experience with club members. Matt is also a committee member and active in the management of the club.

level 3 coach

Gary is England Squash (Level 3) advanced squash and is a long-standing coach here at Dunnington. Gary has extensive experience as a coach and can be seen at the club most days. In addition to his regular coaching programme he also works with some our high potential members operating at County, National and International level. He is currently coaching two Yorkshire number 1s - Poppie Jaram in the girls under 17s category and Ruby Batchelor in girls under 11s. He also coaches England Masters International Matthew Stephenson.

Prior to his coaching career Gary played Masters squash for Yorkshire and twice reached the final of the County over 55s but unfortunately came runner up – perhaps a good coach would have helped! When Gary’s not on court (and that’s not often) he enjoys gardening, music and spending time with his grandchildren.

We also offer individual coaching sessions for anyone looking to develop their confidence or are looking to improve any aspect of their game.  Get in touch with the coaching team to arrange a session or group of sessions.

Adult Coaching sessions are a great way to get in shape, understand the game better and to help players prepare for competitive squash.
